Birmingham as Our Classroom

In the heart of downtown Birmingham, our school is uniquely positioned to use the city as an extension of the classroom. We believe that knowing and connecting with our hometown is a vital part of education, fostering a sense of belonging, curiosity, and civic pride in our students. Our students engage with the rich history, culture, and vibrancy of the Magic City, learning from the world around them.

Pre-K Adventures: Storytime and Strolling Through the City

Every week, our PreK students embark on a walk to the downtown public library for storytime. While this may seem like a simple outing, it is an invaluable opportunity for our youngest learners. Walking through the city streets teaches young children the importance of teamwork, focus, and patience. These walks are lessons in independence and responsibility, as children navigate urban spaces with their peers and teachers. Once at the library, the children immerse themselves in the joys of reading, expanding their imaginations and fostering a lifelong love of books. By the time they return to school, they’ve practiced social skills, physical coordination, and an awareness of the dynamic world outside their classroom walls.

Parks and Play: Exploring Urban Green Spaces

Our proximity to Birmingham’s beautiful city parks, such as CityWalk and Railroad Park, provides extended opportunities for outdoor exploration. These spaces are not just for play—they’re places where students connect with nature, engage in physical activity, and build friendships. Whether it’s playground fun, a game of pickleball, or celebrating special occasions, these parks are vital in teaching children the value of community spaces and healthy recreation.

Cultural Connections: Museums, Theatres, and History

Learning in downtown Birmingham gives our students access to some of the city’s most iconic cultural landmarks. The Birmingham Museum of Art, the Alabama Theatre, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and the newly renovated Carver Theatre are just steps away. These institutions offer a wealth of experiences—from exploring historical exhibits and viewing world-class art to attending live performances. This year, we’re thrilled that the Terrific New Theatre has opened right across the street. Some of our Upper School students will have the unique opportunity to take a class there and stage a performance in this incredible space, allowing them to express their creativity while engaging with Birmingham’s flourishing arts scene.

Discover Birmingham: An 8th-Grade Capstone Experience

One of our most exciting programs is the 8th-grade capstone experience, Discover Bham. Every Friday, our eighth graders leave campus to explore a different part of the city, from historic landmarks to innovative new spaces. By understanding their hometown’s past, including its role in the Civil Rights Movement and its transformation into a thriving cultural hub, students gain a deeper appreciation for the city’s story—and their place within it. This exploration culminates in a self-directed art project, where students reflect on how their understanding of Birmingham has grown. The year ends with a gallery celebration showcasing their projects, a powerful moment of pride and achievement for students and families alike.

Why It Matters

Using the city as a classroom helps our students develop skills that go beyond academics. It fosters curiosity, adaptability, and a sense of connection to the world around them. By engaging with Birmingham’s history, culture, and community, our students gain a deeper understanding of their identity and responsibilities as members of this vibrant city. We are grateful to call downtown Birmingham home!
