French Convention 2024

The French Convention program, designed by 6th grader Olivia C.

On March 1, Advent’s 8th graders and 5th-7th grade members of French Club headed to Tuscaloosa to compete in the annual state French Convention at the University of Alabama. French Club members practiced for weeks leading up to competition to prepare songs, readings, a 5-minute skit, and more. This opportunity for performance in a foreign language builds public speaking skills and confidence. The whole school got a chance to see their dress rehearsals, and they did an amazing job!

This year's theme was "Le Sport: À Vos Marques, Prêt, Partez!" [Sports: On Your Marks, Get Set, Go!] to celebrate the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris. This year’s skit, presented by the 8th grade class, was a take on the popular French comic book series Les Cahiers d'Esther. The students brought the comic to life with Esther telling the origin story of tennis, from its medieval monastic beginnings to its prominence in the courts of French monarchs.

Advent students competed with teams from middle schools and high schools around Alabama, including many Advent alumni from the classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Their hard work paid off, and the students won “Supérieur” in the skit and the group song, with “Supérieur” and “Très Bien” awards for numerous other group and individual events.

Nous sommes très fiers de nos étudiants!!
